A flat roof over a garage, extension or porch has to cope with far more than a passing shower. It faces standing water, wind-driven rain, summer heat and winter frost, often with little room for error around edges, outlets and adjoining walls. When choosing EPDM or GRP flat roofs, the best option is not simply the one that sounds strongest. It is the one that suits your roof’s size, shape, use and condition, then is installed properly.

Both systems can provide reliable, low-maintenance protection for Somerset homes. They are, however, different materials with different strengths. Understanding those differences helps you make a confident decision rather than replacing one flat roof problem with another.

EPDM or GRP flat roofs: the key difference

EPDM is a rubber membrane, usually supplied in large sheets and bonded to a prepared roof deck. It has a dark, smooth appearance and remains flexible throughout its life. On many straightforward domestic roofs, a single sheet can cover the main area with very few joins.

GRP, often called fibreglass roofing, is formed on site. A reinforcing mat is covered with resin and finished with a tough coloured topcoat, creating a hard, continuous waterproof surface. Neither material is automatically right for every property. Hard-wearing, but less tolerant of movement

GRP may be the better option when you want a crisp, hard-wearing finish on a visible roof or a roof with more detailed shaping. It is also a strong choice when the roof deck is stable and the installation can be carried out in suitable conditions.

Budget will naturally play a part, but comparing quotations line by line is more useful than choosing on the lowest figure alone. Check whether the quote includes stripping the existing roof, replacing damaged decking, improving falls where needed, edge trims, waste removal and the finish around walls, doors or rooflights.
